Kununurra Suburb Profile

Welcome to Kununurra and Australia’s incredible East Kimberley Region. Located just 35km from the Northern Territory border Kununurra is the northern gateway to Western Australia and a place of stunning landscapes, spectacular tropical wet seasons and idyllic dry seasons that lure tourists the world over.

Surrounded by some of the world’s oldest natural wonders Kununurra is also one of Australia’s youngest towns. It is a place of brilliant contrast; of rugged landscapes, pristine lakes and rivers, wetlands and savannah plains and iconic flora and fauna found nowhere else in the world as well as being rich in indigenous heritage and culture.

Modern Kununurra owes its existence to the visionary construction or the Ord Diversion Dam in the 1960’s which allowed the establishment of the Ord Irrigation Scheme and the later construction of Lake Argyle Dam which ensured Australia’s most secure water resource into the future as well as generating green Hydro electric power to support the growing towns of Kununurra and Wyndham and the world’s largest Diamond Mine – Argyle Diamonds which is just south of Kununurra… and of course there’s still a few million square kilometres of pastoral cattle stations generating vital export income for Australia.

ignificant expansion of the irrigation capacity during the last 5 years has now provided for continued growth in the agriculture for coming decades, which combines with tourism, resources and service sectors to underpin a very stable economic future.

As a service delivery hub for a huge region, Kununurra also has a strong government presence and is well serviced with modern hospital and health facilities, schools, shops and an airport with daily direct jet services to Perth and Darwin.
